The Challenges of Purchasing a Desk Online

by Amanda Goedken on 2008-09-04 - Email This

Shopping online for a desk can be quite challenging. Many online stores sell parts separately, leaving you to put all the pieces together. Although this method allows you more options, it tends to require an exhaustive search for the add-ons you want. In other words, it’s not very shopper-friendly. To make your shopping experience a little more pleasant, I’ve showcased the different desk options from Next Day’s catalog. This way you’ll know what to look for when shopping online for a desk!

Allsop® Metal Art™ Corner Stand

by Amanda Goedken on 2008-09-02 - Email This
Corners can be a nuisance; they’re easy to run into (if you’re clumsy like me), and not everything fits on or around them. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make use of them. The corners of your desk may be valuable space, especially if you have a small workspace. To help you create more room on your desk and promote better ergonomics, I suggest the Allsop Metal Art Corner Stand. The triangular urban design turns a corner into a usable space and brings a clean, modern look to any desktop.

Desk Accessories for Organization Help

by Amanda Goedken on 2008-08-28 - Email This

Scattered papers, stacks of file folders and random sticky notes frequently overtake the surface of my desk. I try to keep it organized, but like many of you, I’m usually working on 3 to 4 projects at one time. Before I know it, the piles of “stuff” have become quicksand. Pens, highlighters, post-its, etc. seem to just disappear. Then the phone rings and as I answer, “This is Amanda,” the thought of pens and sand traps race through my mind. I begin the frantic search for my pen (all the while doing my best to keep a calm phone voice). I usually find it while I’m digging through the stacks of paper. Unless it rolls onto the floor, in which case it takes a little longer to locate.

To keep my frantic search episodes to a minimum, and achieve better desk organization, I’ve developed a few simple “rules” to work by.

  • Always keep extra pens in the drawer – at all times
  • Loose paper is a no-no. Use a notebook for notes and title the page

Teachers Make Every Other Profession Possible

by Amanda Goedken on 2008-08-26 - Email This

I once read a story about people sitting around a dinner table discussing life and professions. The point of the story was that though teachers don’t seem to be as well respected as CEOs and Presidents of companies, “Teachers make every other profession possible.” After reading the story, I thought to myself, that’s true! Since the beginning of our time we’ve been learning from others who have taught us what they know.

Although I’ve never been a teacher, I did live with one for a few months. Last year I lived with my cousin while she was in her first year of teaching (she teaches 4th grade). As a new teacher she spent hours every night writing lesson plans and grading papers (sometimes I helped her color “work station projects”). She would even spend her weekends prepping for lessons, and spend her own money on supplies for school. Until then, I had no idea how much extra time and effort our teachers were dedicating to teaching. To all of the teachers out there: Thank you for all that you do!

The Benefits of Journaling and Reflection

by Amanda Goedken on 2008-08-20 - Email This

According to an article published in Current Issues in Education (Vol. 9, 2006), journals can be defined as the permanent records of thoughts and ideas that an individual has processed and clarified through the act of writing or otherwise recording their experiences.

The article accentuates the importance of leaning through reflection. Journal writing is said to give learners the opportunity to shape their ideas, create new ideas, and connect them to what they already know. The benefits of journaling go beyond “writing to learn,” but are rather a way to record thoughts and ideas before they evaporate from our minds. The article suggests the true benefit of processing an idea into language is that it forces us to clarify our ideas.

This makes sense. I can relate this to my rambling thoughts. Only until I write out a series of thoughts do they start to resemble a clear idea. In fact, when I think back on my school years, the subjects I remember most clearly are those that I was forced to write about. My composition class required a daily journal entry and reflecting on the topics assigned in “Streams of Consciousness,” a psychology course I took in college, was essential for discussions during class. Maybe everyone should have a notepad for reflecting and writing down ideas. The composition notebook is a good place to start. The pages are permanently bound for safe keeping. Get yours on Next Day.

On Taking Your Batteries for Granted

by Amanda Goedken on 2008-08-15 - Email This

I think it’d be fair to assume that most of us use batteries on a daily basis. From cars, cell phones, computers, watches and TV remotes, many of our common daily activities require the use of batteries. And if one of those precious batteries “dies,” and is not immediately recharged or replaced, it could have a negative affect on your whole day! When you think about it, most luxuries we’ve grown accustomed only function properly when powered by some form of energy, thus today’s focus (for those of you late to catch on) is the all-important battery!

There’s really no way to accurately denote the very first invention of the battery. Sure, you can say that Alessandro Volta invented the first battery in 1800 with his voltaic pile, or maybe the invention was first discovered by the Parthian Empire in 129 B.C. Either way, the modern day battery is important for modern day living. I challenge you, to those of you who are bored and looking for something to do, compile a list of every battery use you can think of. There are so many!

To ensure your whole day isn’t affected because of a dead battery, I’ve provided a list of a few batteries and charges for you. This way you’ll always be prepared!

- Specialty Batteries for watches and calculators

- Eveready® Energizer® Industrial® Alkaline Batteries

- Eveready® Energizer® e²® Lithium® Batteries

- Rechargeable Battery Chargers Smart Charger

- NiMH 15-Minute Battery Chargers and Rechargeable Batteries

Breathe Healthy, Live Healthy

by Amanda Goedken on 2008-08-14 - Email This

A HEPA air purifier in the home or office is the key to a healthier indoor environment. With so many air pollutants – dust, pollen, bacteria, mold spores, smoke, etc., and so little sick days, it’s important to stay healthy by breathing clean air.

What does HEPA mean?

The acronym HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. It describes the ability of the filter to capture particles to clean the air. The acronym originated in World War II to describe filters used in gas masks, and a military specification was written to describe these filters. The specification requires that a HEPA filter remove at least 99.97% of the particles in the air down to three-tenths of a micron in size (a micron is one-millionth of a meter). Particles this small are troublesome. They are small enough to escape most types of filtration and are easily inhaled. Many of these small particles that escape most infiltration systems are those that trigger asthma and allergies. So when you’re looking to buy an air filter, make sure it’s a HEPA - down to 0.3 micron or smaller sized particles and at least 99.97% efficiency.

Start breathing clean air in your home or office and live healthy! Browse our selection of HEPA air filters on Next Day Office Supplies. Or check out the ones I’ve listed below:
