Office Ergonomics
A few years ago we outfitted our office with brand new chairs. There’s nothing I love more than a big, comfy office chair. You know, the kind you can curl up in with your blanket, all tucked in for the day’s work?
Well, imagine my surprise then when I got to work on the morning of the New Chairs, only to find the equivalent of a dollhouse chair in my cubicle!
“What’s this?” I cried.
“It’s your Petite Office Chair – ergonomically designed for you” they told me, their eyes gleaming with pride.
Ergonomics has become a real buzz word in today’s corporate world. From ergonomic keyboards to ergonomic chairs, it seems that every manufacturer has a product that fits into the ergonomic category.
But what is ergonomics, and how does it impact you on the job?
Ergonomics is simply the study of human capabilities in relationship to work demands.
How does that impact you? Well, ensuring your workplace is ergonomic will not only improve workplace safety and reduce workplace injuries, but it will also make you more productive, efficient, and comfortable.
Let’s look at one particular item: the ergonomic keyboard. There are many different styles of ergonomic keyboards, and it’s up to you to determine which style fits your needs.
Natural and Split keyboards conform to your natural arm and hand positions, resulting in less fatigue and a reduced risk of repetitive use injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
In addition to an ergonomic keyboard, you may also choose to use an adjustable keyboard platform, which allows you to adjust the height of the keyboard to meet your needs.
Ergonomic keyboards are just a small slice of the ergonomics pie. Ergonomics continues with adjustable height desks, ergonomic chairs, footrest, and more.
My ergonomic chair, although miniature compared to others, is a work of art. The arm rests are just the right height, the seat is just the right size, and my feet rest comfortably on the floor. I can still tuck myself in for the day’s work, and best of all, nobody else can fit in it.
