Technology - Keep it Simple

In the office supply world, technology is a VERY broad term.  Technology encompasses equipment – computers, printers, scanners – as well as their supplies – toner, memory cards, cables.

For most small businesses, technology is a scary word – put “technology fears” into Google and it returns “about” 1,030,000 matches (if Google counted to 1,030,000, did they just get tired and not want to be precise?).  It’s understandable; most of us aren’t technology professionals, and the dizzying pace of change and occasionally progress can be overwhelming.

To repeat a theme from my prior post, use technology in simple pieces.  If you work at home and at the office but don’t want to figure out how to use remote access software or carry a laptop that you sync back and forth, flash drives are a great way to transport information and work back and forth between home and the office.  They’re easy to use, require only that you understand what a USB port is (and if you don’t have one, you can now quit reading this post), and they’re not that expensive.

Today’s flash drives come in sizes from 256 MB (more storage than home computers had just 10 years ago) to 4 GB and more.  Not only do they allow you to transport work to and from the office and home, but they provide a very good way to back up important documents, presentations or folders.  Flash drives are an example of technology that can work for you, not keep you up worrying at night.
