Create Motivational Learning Environments for the Classroom

School teachers are always creative when it comes to decorating classrooms. It didn’t occur to me when I was little that my teacher’s wall displays would influence my life outside of education, or that I would still remember what they looked like 15 years later. At the time, I didn’t realize that each chart, map, and poster not only served an educational purpose, but was likely used as motivational incentive as well. “Get an A on your spelling test and you’ll get a gold star sticker next to your name!” “The student of the week gets to move the weather thermometer today.” So I always worked hard to earn the gold star. This type of motivation has cycled over and over throughout my life – work hard and you’ll achieve the success you’re seeking.

How clever my teachers were! It’s so obvious to me now that my teachers were masters of operant conditioning and reinforcement. I will never forget the day when my 6th grade language arts teacher handed me a king sized candy bar for reciting a list of over 100 English prepositions. To this day, I can recite parts of the list:
“could, would, should,
of, off, on,
below, beneath, beside,
with, within, without…”

So today’s blog is dedicated to teachers who’ve spent their own time and money to make their classroom environments fun and exciting for their students. We appreciate all that you do. And incase you’re ever looking for new classroom materials, Next Day’s School Supplies page is a great place to start. We have a special category assigned just for teachers and their classroom needs.
